Sahara uk charity began in year 2003 with visit of few British midland staff to sahara club pokhara, Nepal. In the group there was a lady called siobhan faiers who had very keen interest on helping the underprivileged children of nepal. Unfortunately she passed away same year in september 2003. British midland staff and her family got togather and vowed to fulfill her dream and established a charity group called PACT ( Pokhara academy children trust) were Navin gurung took the role of Co-ordinater and Gunner stromcholm took the president role. This group manage to raised more then £20,000 towards the newly set up Street boys football academy in pokhara in 2004. At first 20 boys were taken under the supervision of sahara club pokhara.IMG_9565
As the time pass by and the boys grew up, there was a need of bigger place and better sports facilities, sahara decided to have their own academy with full sports facilities and hence as a result they bought their own land in Dobella pokhara. With the donation from PACT ,sahara was successful to buy their own land in 2005. As there was some financial difficulty the project took little bit longer then expected.
In 2008 Sahara uk was formed where President role was taken by Navin Gurung with most of the members from EX-Gurkhas. The funding process was active again in co-ordination of Dilip Gurung and Muchettra Gurung in 2009 and manage to raise more then £60.000 from uk only . The building of football academy was well underway as the donation and fund raising was well underway. . There were many helping hands from all woke of like both in nepal and uk. Even Cookham bridge rotary, in leadership of Mr Derek Smith were able to involve in building a water boring project worth £20,000. Now there are sufficient water in the academy also supplying further 30 more surrounding village houses .
The academy was completed in 2012 in the cost of £1,30,000.(70% funding was from uk) . At Present there are 30 underprivileged boys from broken home (Mostly have no parents) under the supervision of sahara club pokhara.
During untimely devastating earth quake in nepal in April , Bourn end rotary ,cookham bridge rotary , sahara uk and stokenchurch locals we manage to sent clothing, medicine, water purification tanks, mosquito nets , tents, hospital equipment worth more then£45,000 to Nepal.
At Present , under the coordination of sahara vice president Mr Min B Gurung , sahara uk is under the process of raising fund for rebuilding schools which was completely destroyed during the earth quake. As sahara uk has already raised more then £30,000, some of the money is already delivered to kick start the project. Funding process is still going strongly from different organisations such as Rotarian , football club, security forms and Nepalese communities in uk.
